Cartier Tank Chinoise 100th Anniversary Limited Edition
Cartier Tank Chinoise 100th Anniversary Limited Edition
A legendary Art Deco creation, Cartier’s delicate modernisation of the Chinoise has kept it looking irresistible even on its 100th birthday.” Nick Baranga, Founder
Inspired by the design of Renault tanks in World War I, the Cartier Tank was first introduced in 1919. Louis Cartier, subsequently inspired by East Asian elements and particularly Chinese porticos, introduced the Tank Chinoise in 1922, with a pair of horizontal bars positioned over the vertical case flanks. In celebration of its 100th anniversary, Cartier have released a limited-edition run of 150 pieces in 18k yellow gold, and have captured the essence of the vintage Chinoises, but with contemporary flourishes. The case measures a generous 39.49mm x 29.2mm, a rectangular shape that echoes the classic Tank, and Cartier have created a contrast in textures by employing a satin finish on the vertical bars and a mirror finish on the horizontal bars. The use of blued sword hands in place of the original Breguet hands is a cleaner, more modern look, but naturally the Chinoise’s signature “portico” case remains. Its golden sunray dial adds a glimmering sheen, and the use of a sapphire in the crown is a gorgeous touch.
