There’s wristwatches, there’s Nautilus’, then there’s this. Commonly known among the community to be the King of the Nautilus range, the 5980/1R is an outstanding piece. Albeit not the most precious of metals (with Platinum being both rarer and more expensive), the solid Rose Gold chronograph is a statement piece, and although its always been “hard to get at retail” since its introduction, that doesn’t quite fit the bill anymore. Quite simply impossible to buy from Patek themselves, the demand (and thus prices) for these 5980’s has sky-rocketed in recent times and it’s widely considered one of the fastest appreciating Patek’s of recent times. The Nautilus shape it possesses is instantly recognisable and truly iconic, yet this particular reference boasts the benefit of a Chronograph function in addition to the time and date. Controlled by two beautifully-integrated pushers on the right hand side of the case, the design is not impacted whatsoever and allows the watch to be an incredibly useful tool, in addition to its function of being a time keeper and piece of jewellery. Featuring a black gradient dial with matching rose gold applied hour markers and hands, the overall aesthetic of this watch is a pleasure to cast your eyes on and even better on the wrist, in person. There’s no saying as and when this reference is likely to be discontinued (given its steel counterpart left us some years ago now), but as and when it does, the full rose gold 5980 is set to be a historic reference with the brands most-recognisable range.

Condition Report:

In immaculate overall condition, this one owner from new watch has been worn less than a dozen times. The watch has been extremely-well looked after, displayed by the fact that there are zero deep scratches across any of the polished or brushed surfaces of the watch. Fully complete with its polished wood Patek Philippe box, leather folder, booklets, full set of links, date-pusher, and all-important Certificate of Origin, the watch remains under Patek Philippe’s warranty until May 2022.
