A factory gem-set 18k gold Rolex is an item of beauty, rarity and immaculate attention to detail. This now-discontinued piece, nicknamed the ‘Cognac’, features a 39mm case with classic Datejust styling, and a ​​yellow gold bezel set with 48 baguette-cut sapphires, in a variety of tones from dark orange to bright yellow. The sapphires are painstakingly chosen to present a very specific gradient, forming an uninterrupted ring of colour around the face of the watch. The polishing, cutting and setting is done by hand, a very specific variation on the gem-cutter and jeweller’s craft. This requires technical perfection and many discarded carats of sapphire, part of the reason why the watch is such a valuable work of art. Matching the bezel, the dial is a rich orange sunburst colour, with brilliant-cut diamond hour indicators and large “6” and “9” diamond-set markers. The Pearlmaster bracelet, rare and instantly recognisable to connoisseurs, includes invisible ceramic inserts to prevent wearing and stretching over time.
